MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD)

WHAT IS MLD?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage otherwise known as MLD, is used primarily to promote the optimal functioning of the lymphatic vessels that lead to the circulatory system. MLD techniques are very gentle in pressure, this and the techniques used facilitate the removal of metabolic wastes, excess water, toxins, bacteria, large protein molecules and foreign substances from tissue via the internal lymph vessels and venous capillaries.

MLD has powerful cleansing, relaxing, pain relieving and immunological effects byway of a manual, gentle flowing, rhymic massage.  By gently massaging the body in this way it relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, reduces pain and enhances the activity of the immune system.

MLD is very effective in the treatment of a wide variety of symptoms including Oedema, Skin Disorders, Headache, Sinus congestion, sprains and aches, stress, digestive disorders, pre and post surgery to help remove tissue congestion and minimize scar formation. It is particularly useful as part of post mastectomy therapy, to reduce oedema and fibrosis and to relieve pain and tension.

HOW DOES MLD WORK?

MLD works on the principle of motion. Research has revealed that 'stretching' to open the lymphatics will allow lymph to be moved down the channels and be directed to the correct lymph nodes. Rhythm and direction is very important as the desired effect is to allow the vessels to open and close at the correct speed for the lymph to create a smooth clear pathway.
