What is Reflexology?
Most of us have heard of reflexology and are aware it involves the feet, but did you know that the first references to the healing art of Reflexology date back to the early 6th Dynasty? (a wall painting in an Egyptian tomb depicts the practice of therapeutic massage to the hands and feet). There are also early associations from the Far East. It is believed that this practice is one of the oldest forms of natural healing.
From early in the 1900's "Zone Therapy" was discovered, By Dr William Fitzgerald. Some years later, Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist, further developed and refined Zone Therapy and devised the term "Reflexology". Ingham stated that tension or blockages in a reflex point in the foot corresponded to a condition in the related part of the body, claiming the body is mapped in the hands and feet, specifically in the nerve endings (the reflex points).
How does Reflexology work?
Reflexology is a complementary therapy. The principle of tapping into the "natural healer within" applies. It’s that simple! Reflexology works holistically, believing the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, caring for the mind, body and soul.
Reflexology encourages:
| · toxin elimination | | | | | | | | | | | · improves circulation | | · stimulates the immune system | | | | | | | | | | | · energises | | · re-balances | | | | | | | | | | | · relaxes | | · re-vitalises | | | | | | | | | | | |
What happens during a treatment?
Sessions usually last an hour (the initial session is longer to allow the therapist to gain an understanding of your condition, contributory medical and lifestyle factors). While you lie back and relax, the therapist will use their hands to apply gentle pressure to the reflex points in feet (or hands), stimulating the body’s own healing processes. Your professionally trained therapist can detect subtle changes (tensions) and by applying further pressure to specific areas, can disperse these blockages, encouraging the body to return to its natural balanced state. Your therapist ensures you remain within your comfort zone at all times throughout the treatment.
